2010
Reunion Events
It’s been
25 years since the first revival of Lain family reunions
in 1985 – it had been 50 years since the last one was
held in 1935. In 1985, the Old Stone House was 200 years old.
Phyllis Lain decided it was a good time to see if we could get
some Lains together to celebrate. Ever since that wonderful
event, we’ve been getting together every five years. This
year, the Old Stone House is 225. We’re all a little older
too. We want to celebrate 25 years of these reunions which have
become very important events for hundreds of Lain cousins from
all over the country – and beyond.
The basic schedule for
the 2010 reunion hasn’t changed from past reunions. We’ll
have plenty of time for people to sit and talk; plenty of other
things to do when you’ve sat and talked long enough. We’re
adding a couple of new activities that we think will be fun.
The Rest
Of The Schedule
Friday night:
A pig roast, story telling, catching up with people, and a bonfire
for people who want to get smoke in their eyes while soaking
up some extra heat on a hot muggy August evening.
Saturday: Registration
begins at 10 am Saturday; the chicken barbeque at noon, a short
program and picture taking in early afternoon. Dinner will be
a partly potluck – leftover chicken and pork, some sandwich/salad
platters and desserts – or other dishes - that we’re
counting on people to bring. Later we’ll have music and
dancing with both a DJ and a live band – Jay Unger if
we’re really lucky.
Other activities will be going on all
day – you can visit the Stone House and see pictures and
memorabilia from past generations; spend some money at the silent
auction or on quilt raffle tickets and reunion mementos; play
sports and games (including a double badminton tournament –
sign up with Ellen Lain before 10:30 Saturday), visit special
places on the farm and the Loree cemetery, and sit and talk
to all your cousins.
Sunday: After a basic
continental breakfast, there will be a church service at the
Old School Baptist Church. Anyone who is interested in being
in the choir should contact Ellen Lain (elain@minisink.com).
The church service is the last event of the reunion, although
everyone is invited to share in the fun of the post-reunion
cleanup.
Things To Do And
Things To Bring:
- Let us know if you’re coming
(Print Form)
- Make sure other family members are
getting reunion information.
- Sign up for the double badminton tournament
by Saturday morning (talk to or email Ellen Lain – elain@minisink.com)
- Volunteer to be in the choir for the
church service (contact Ellen Lain – see above).
- Bring something interesting, useful
or unique for the silent auction.
- Bring a dessert or other dish for the
Friday or Saturday night dinners – if you’re local.
(Don’t try to squeeze your apple pie into your suitcase.)
- Bring a family story to tell.
- Make a donation if you can.

Silent
Auction
This
is a new idea for raising money besides walking around
with our hands out. We’ll have a place set up with
donated items with a paper beside each to write a bid
if you want it. At the end, the highest bidder pays up
and takes it. What we need from as many people as possible
is the items to sell – it doesn’t have to
be expensive, but should be something useful, eye-catching
or unique that you think people would pay more than a
dollar or two for. We won’t have a huge space, so
we’re looking for quality, not quantity of donations. |
Tell
Us A Story
We
all know funny and/or interesting stories about our branch
of the family. Maybe you’ve heard them so many times
you’re sure everybody knows them. But that’s
probably not true. We’d like to hear some stories
that are entertaining and help us know who all our cousins
and ancestors are or were, and about their lives, beliefs,
and character. We’ll set up a place Friday night
for people to hear and tell stories; we could do more
Saturday if there’s interest.

Donations
Needed -- And Very Much Appreciated
We don’t
charge people to attend the reunion because we want everyone
to come, even if they’re down to their last dollar. We
recognize that some people spend a lot just to get here. But
we rely on donations to fund most of the significant costs of
this event. Please send something to help if you can. Checks
should be made out to the Lain Family Association and mailed
to:
Chris
Sarno - 29 Ruth Drive - Wantage, NJ 07461
Thank
you for any help you can give.
